JY Park, head of JYP Entertainment and a singer, has been appointed co-chair of the Popular Culture Exchange Committee, which reports directly to President Lee Jae-myung.
On the 9th, Kang Hoon-sik, Chief of Staff to the President, announced at a briefing held at the Presidential Office in Yongsan that the new "Popular Culture Exchange Committee" would be established, with Choi Hee-young as co-chair.
Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik added, "Park is one of Korea's leading singers and a K-pop star.
"We have been working hard to globalize pop culture," he said, "so that people all over the world can enjoy our pop culture more, and we can come into contact with diverse foreign cultures and create a Republic of Korea where culture flourishes."
JY Park explained the reason behind his selection, saying, "Acting on a government job is a great opportunity for me to work in the entertainment industry."
It was a huge burden and worry in many ways, so I thought about it a lot, but I felt that K-Pop is facing such a special opportunity right now, and that I had to make the most of it.
"I decided to make a decision," he continued, "In 2003, I went to America without any particular destination and distributed promotional materials for our singers to American record companies.
When Wonder Girls became the first Korean artist to make it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2013, and even now, my dream remains the same.
"To be loved by the world," he said, "While working on the ground, I have thought that there should be institutional support, and I want to organize it so that effective support can be provided, and also to support junior artists.
I will work hard to ensure that artists have many better opportunities. I also hope that K-POP will take another step forward and go beyond spreading our culture to helping people around the world to know each other.
"I will do my best to make this a place of understanding and exchange," he said. "As this is something that has begun after much deliberation, I would like to ask for your advice and support.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hee-young for taking on this project with me. Thanks to him, I was able to find the courage to do it."
