Korea to send 38k foreign workers to farming villages in first half of agricultural season
On May 23rd, the government decided to support the largest number of foreign workers in history, including 38,000 in the first half of the year, in order to alleviate the labor shortage during the busy farming season.

The People's Power and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock and Food held a working party-government council on rural issues during the busy farming season at the National Assembly.

With the peak season in full swing, the government inspected the supply and demand situation for human resources and discussed support measures for farmers affected by the abnormally low temperature in the spring.

In order to alleviate the labor shortage during the busy farming season, the government decided to provide the largest number of foreign workers in history and promote various projects such as public seasonal work projects and the expansion of rural human resources intermediation centers.

The number of foreign workers is also planned to reach 38,000 in the second half of the year. The Ministry of Justice decided to allocate foreign workers for the second half of the year and notify them by the end of May.

With the full-scale harvest of garlic and onions approaching, the government will strengthen support for personnel mainly in the main production areas, and plan to distribute seasonal workers early in the second half of 2023 to extend the period of stay as soon as possible.

From the end of March to the beginning of April this year, 42,000 hectares of crops such as fruits were damaged by abnormally low temperatures and frost.

In connection with this, the government has requested additional support measures such as early payment of disaster recovery expenses and financial support for the stabilization of farm management.
