How K-drug lord Jo Bong-haeng, main character of TV series 'God of Narco', died
Cho Bong-haeng, best known as the model for Korean drug dealer Jeong Yeo-hwan in the Netflix original series "God of Narco," died while serving time in prison in 2016.

Channel A announced on September 17th that Jo Bong-haeng died on April 19th, 2016 at a university hospital in Gwangju City and was diagnosed with disease. The cause of death listed on the death certificate was heart failure and high blood pressure.

While serving time at Haenam Prison in Jeollanam-do Province, he received a suspension of execution due to worsening chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure. It was reported that his condition deteriorated and he died while being treated at a hospital after being imprisoned for the first time in five years. At the time of his death, he was 64 years old.

His whereabouts were unknown until now, but he was presumed to have returned to Suriname after serving his sentence.

In an interview, Yoon Jong-bin, the director of the TV series “God of Narco,” said, “Neither the NIS nor the prosecution said they could inform me, I didn’t ask any more.” This is the first time that a death has been confirmed in Korea.

From the late 1990s to the early 2000s, he was called a "drug lord" as the head of a large drug trafficking organization in the South American Republic of Suriname.

In July 2009, he was arrested at Sao Paulo International Airport in Brazil after a joint investigation by the National Intelligence Service and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
