50 tons of garbage collected after Seoul fireworks festival
After the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seoul International Fireworks Festival held for the first time in three years attracted more than one million people, but there was no "garbage riot."

On October 9th, the city of Seoul announced that it had collected 50 tons of garbage at Yeouido and Icheon Hangang Parks, that were crowded due to the fireworks festival the day before.

Compared to the 45 tons of garbage collected at the time of the 2019 fireworks festival, which was the last event held before the COVID-19 epidemic, it increased by about 11%.

Organizer Hanwha estimated that about 1.05 million people enjoyed the fireworks display at the Yeouido event venue and neighboring areas the day before, but compared to 2019, when 1 million people gathered, the number of spectators and garbage is down. Both recoveries increased.

A person in charge of the Seoul Han River Business Headquarters explained, "The amount of garbage generated was seven times higher than usual, but it was less than we had expected, and it was easy to dispose of because the garbage was collected."

Hanwha also said, "We heard that the citizens worked hard to form a volunteer group together with Hanwha staff, and that the whole area of the venue was properly organized."

Surveillance cameras, however, captured traffic jams caused by illegally parked and stopped vehicles gathering on Han River Bridge, Gangbyeonbuk-ro, and Olympic Boulevard to watch the fireworks display.

Earlier, the police announced that they were planning to implement a strong crackdown on this.
