According to the British Daily Mail and others on October 17th, four quails hatched recently while on display at a supermarket in Piaui, northeastern Brazil. The quail hatched in a sealed plastic container containing 30 commercial quail eggs.
Market employee Fabio Gómez heard a strange noise coming from a display stand and turned to the noise to confirm it was coming from a quail egg container for sale. Surprised, Gomez saw something moving inside the container and when he opened it, a quail had broken it shell and hatched. The other three had already hatched.
In order for quail eggs to hatch, it is necessary to maintain a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius and a humidity of 60% or more, and the temperature inside the store at the time was 40 degrees Celsius.
Quail eggs sold for food, on the other hand, are unfertilized and usually do not hatch. Bruno Costa, a local animal expert, said, "Ordinary farmers collect and raise only females, but the farmer who delivered the product raises females and males together, and by chance, fertilized eggs are included. It seems that it was distributed in a broken state."
It was reported that two of the four hatched at the market died after two minutes, and the remaining two died in the process of being handed over to the delivery company the next day.
