Changing mandatory closing days for large supermarkets to weekdays increases market sales and improves customer satisfaction in Daegu, South Korea
Daegu City announced on the 19th that large supermarkets are required to close from February 12th to July 31st, changing the mandatory closing days from February 12th to July 31st, instead of the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month.
It was announced that market and restaurant sales growth rates reached 32.3% and 25.1%, respectively. During the six-month period after mandatory holidays were changed to weekdays, sales at major retail stores in Daegu remained the same as the previous year.
Sales at large supermarkets and supermarkets (SSM) increased by 19.8%, and by 6.6%, respectively.
Retail sales growth rate was higher in neighborhoods where compulsory closing days remained on Sundays.
It was higher than the municipalities of Busan (Busan, 16.5%), Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongsangbuk-do, 10.3%), and Gyeongsangnam-do (Gyeongsangnam-do, 8.3%).
In a survey of 600 consumers regarding their satisfaction with converting compulsory holidays to weekdays, 87.5% rated it positively.
Professor Cho Chung-han of Gyeonggi University of Science and Technology said, ``This result shows that large supermarkets are not in competition with markets and small stores.
It shows. Looking at the fact that consumers quickly adapted to the change in mandatory closing days at large supermarkets within six months, we need a strategy that adapts to changes in consumption rather than imposing compulsory closing days.''
I'm looking forward to it.
