Destroyers from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and others participated. Maritime interdiction training between the three countries resumed for the first time in seven years since 2016, and anti-piracy training resumed for the first time in six years since 2017.
The South Korean Navy said, ``This exercise is based on an agreement to resume and regularize training at the South Korea-U.S.-Japan defense ministers' meeting held on the occasion of the Shangri-La meeting in June this year.
This was done as a follow-up to the agreement reached at the Korea-U.S.-Japan Summit at Camp David in August to strengthen security cooperation between Korea, the United States, and Japan in order to deter and respond to North Korean nuclear and missile threats.
