President Yoon condemns North Korea's nuclear and missile development and human rights violations - South Korea
On the 28th, South Korean President Yoon Seo-gyeol met with the ``North Korea Human Rights Experts Group,'' which is made up of experts who are familiar with the human rights situation in North Korea.
"Violations are unanimously unacceptable to the international community, and we must continue to send that message." In addition, ``North Korea launched a missile called a military reconnaissance satellite and preemptively nuclear weapons.
"By hinting at an attack, they are posing a serious challenge to South Korea's security." President Yoon said, ``The fact that North Korean defectors staying overseas are forcibly repatriated against their will is another serious problem.''
This is a serious violation of human rights. The Convention against the Status of Refugees and the Convention against Torture, which prohibit forced deportation, must be respected."
On top of that, ``The North Korea Human Rights Report released by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea (COI) in 2014
``The North Korean authorities have declared widespread and systematic human rights violations by the North Korean authorities as crimes against humanity and recommended that the top leadership be held accountable, but the human rights situation in North Korea has not improved since then.''
Furthermore, ``Human rights issues in North Korea are not unique to North Korea, but are issues related to humanitarian values that we all share. The international community must remain vigilant and respond in solidarity.''
"We need to do more," he said. Officials from the North Korean Human Rights Experts Group who attended the meeting said, ``We appreciate the Yun administration's proactive efforts to address North Korean human rights issues, which were put on the back burner under the previous administration.
``I hope that the South Korean government will continue to play an active role in widely disseminating the current state of human rights violations in North Korea and encouraging perpetrators to be held accountable.''
The North Korean Human Rights Eminent Group is a consultative group established in June 2016 by Lee Jung-hoon, former Ambassador for North Korean Human Rights and International Cooperation.
The organization promotes international cooperation and makes policy recommendations to resolve human rights issues in North Korea. This day's meeting was attended by Mai, who served as the chairperson of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry (COI) on human rights in North Korea.
