A police investigation revealed that a man in his 50s who drowned after jumping into the sea on Geoje Island in southeastern South Korea last October was subjected to gaslighting (psychological control). Changwon District Public Prosecutors Office
On the 17th, the agency's second detective division announced that Mr. A, a man in his 40s, had been detained and indicted on charges including manslaughter and coercion. Mr. A went to a waterside park in Geoje City, Gyeongsangnam-do Province at around 2:10 pm on October 11th last year.
He is suspected of forcing Mr. B, who is in his 50s, to jump into the sea and swim, causing his death. According to the investigation, Mr. A told Mr. B, whom he met several years ago at a simple lodging house, that he was a former violent offender.
He pretended that he was a gang member and assaulted him, and began to psychologically control him. He kept Mr. B awake and fought with Mr. C, another basic living recipient (equivalent to "welfare recipients" in Japan), until he fainted.

The suspect said he was unable to escape from Mr. A. They started drinking alcohol at a restaurant on Geoje Island the day before the incident. Mr. A forced Mr. B and Mr. C to drink alcohol without letting them sleep, and the victims continued to drink until the day of the incident.
The number of bottles of sake reached 22. Mr. A forced Mr. B and Mr. C, who were drunk, to jump into the sea and swim, and while Mr. C hesitated, Mr. B jumped in first and was swept away by the waves and lost his life.
Mr. B, who was exploited by Mr. A, did not have a car and had to travel on foot, and his health deteriorated as he lost around 18 kilograms due to his inability to eat. Mr. C also wears only one outfit all year round and worries about every meal.
It turned out that he had continued to live his life. The incident was initially treated as a simple drowning accident, but a police investigation revealed the full story. The prosecution conducted an integrated psychological analysis on Mr. C.
As a result of investigating the victims, investigating the people around them, and analyzing their account transaction history, it was discovered that Mr. A had been gaslighting the victims over a long period of time since 2018. Police are investigating the suspect's movements.
