Some Japanese media say “Gunma Prefecture’s removal of Korean memorial monument is an outrage” = South Korean report
Some Japanese media outlets have pointed out the injustice of Gunma Prefecture's forced removal of the monument to commemorate Korean workers, and called for it to be cancelled.
The memorial monument for Korean workers in Gunma Prefecture's prefectural park "Gunma no Mori" was built by local residents.
It was established in 2004 to convey to future generations the facts of the forced mobilization of Koreans and to promote friendship between the two countries. The Asahi Shimbun newspaper published an editorial on the 30th regarding Gunma Prefecture's removal of the monument commemorating Korean workers.
"This is an outrageous act that no one can understand," he said, adding, "I urge Governor Ichita Yamamoto to stop it immediately." Citizens' groups used to hold a memorial festival every year in front of this memorial monument, but in 2012 a certain participant
Far-right groups took issue with the reference to "forced recruitment" and called for its removal. Regarding this, the Asahi Shimbun said, ``However, since then, we have taken measures such as refraining from gathering in front of the monument.
It is said that there have been no problems for about 10 years.''The prefectural assembly also unanimously approved its installation, and the monument is engraved with a wish for peace and friendship in Asia, in line with the government's views.''
He continued, ``Governor Yamamoto says, ``The situation is contrary to the public interest. We must correct it as soon as possible.'' But what is the public interest that is being undermined?
Is it bringing benefits? There is no convincing explanation," he said. The Asahi Shimbun also commented on the court's ruling that ``the punishment of the local government that refused to renew the installation permit is lawful,'' saying, ``The judiciary is
"We are not asking for the government to go beyond the law," and added, "This is unacceptable, as it shows a lack of consideration for the negative impact it would have on the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution."
He added, ``It would be unbalanced to go so far as to remove it in a way that would give rise to civil society groups.
``If Governor Yamamoto says, ``There is no problem with the purpose of the monument or the content of the inscription, but there was a violation of the rules in the way it was operated,'' then he should consider ways to make use of the purpose.''
