'MANIAC' is the title track from 'VERSUS', the fourth mini-album released by 'VIVIZ' last November. The genre is pop dance and the lyrical theme deals with a situation where you hate your partner but cannot let go.
'MANIAC' did not achieve much success when it was first released. It was in the top 500 (based on the daily chart below) on MelOn, Korea's largest music streaming platform.
However, it gradually rose in the rankings and reached the top 100 a month after its release. The song's popularity grew as a result of the dance challenge named 'Pop Your Butt' on various short-form platforms.
VIVIZ asked French dancer Canny, who has collaborated with pop star Beyoncé, to dance to 'MANIAC'. The dance challenge utilised the part where the dancers circled their bodies and shook their pelvises in time with the chorus of the song during the dance.
The reason why they chose the name of the dance challenge as 'Pop Your Butt (Ondongyi)' instead of the name of the song is because the scene on their reality show where Kanye said 'Pop Your Butt (Ondongyi)' while teaching the members how to dance became a hot topic among fans.
On 14 April, the members of VIVIZ told the media edaily, "The 'Pop Your Butt' dance challenge was the result of various attempts, worrying about the point where they could make a strong impression in a short period of time.
Many K-pop artists and short form challenge users continued to support the 'Pop Your Ondong' challenge, adding to the popularity of 'MANIAC'. Under these circumstances, 'MANIAC' has continued to gain popularity since the year 2024 and charted in the top 10 on MelOn on the 2nd of last month with a highest position of No. 19.
Before long, it has reached a place where the 'Top 10' is in sight. In the latest weekly chart (28 Jan - 3 Feb) of the CIRCLE Chart, which combines data from major music platforms, the group has risen to No. 15.
VIVIZ is a group formed by the members of the girl group GFRIEND who got together and started their activities in April 2022, and this is the first time they have made their mark on the music charts. Their previous album title tracks failed to chart in the top 100 on MelOn.
'GFRIEND' was the 'sound source powerhouse girl group', and many of their songs, including 'Rough', which topped MelOn, swept the top of the charts. Hence, after their new start as 'VIVIZ', there was a sense of disappointment towards their two-year slump. Before releasing their fourth mini-album with 'MANIAC' as the title track, there was a long gap of 10 months.
Finally, 'VIVIZ' ran backwards in the charts with 'MANIAC'. The girls put out a song under the name 'VIVIZ' instead of 'GFRIEND', which etched the song in the public's mind and turned the question mark glances towards the team into exclamation points. In addition to dance, the members, who have been active as idols for 10 years, have also continued to show their mature stage expressions and publicity for their music.
Their agency BIG PLANET MADE Ent. said, "MelOn's viewer numbers continue to rise and the dance challenge fever continues".
VIVIZ', which revealed the meaning of becoming a group that is faithful to the essence of music while challenging various colours, obtained the power to keep the direction and continue their activities with the good performance of 'MANIAC'.
The members said, "'MANIAC' charting backwards is not just a simple joy of a good result for us, it has brought us a lot of meaning. It gave us encouragement and recognition for the time we have spent so far, and we thought that it would be an important power to give us courage for the days to come.
It was also noted that BIG PLANET MADE Ent. signed an exclusive contract with Kinney, who choreographed 'MANIAC' last month. There is a big possibility that 'VIVIZ' will entrust the dance of their upcoming new song to Kinney, who has also confirmed their chemistry, and the atmosphere of anticipation for their comeback performance is already high.
