Following last year's international hit drama production 'The Glory', Studio Dragon has followed it up with another successful production of 'Marry My Husband' this year, cementing its position as a K-drama household name. Marry My Husband is available in Korea on tvN and Tving, and internationally on Amazon Prime Video.
'Marry My Husband', which finished airing on 20 June, became the first K-drama to rank first in the global daily TV show rankings since Flix Patrol-standard Amazon Prime Video launched its global service in 2016. In addition to the daily ranking, the monthly TV show ranking, which is a measure of long-term box-office success, also rose to No. 2 last January, the highest record for a K-drama.
The 'Marry My Husband' boom was not only seen in Asia, where K-drama productions were strong, but also in many Western countries. Marry My Husband" ranked first in the daily rankings in a cumulative 67 countries during its broadcast period, including Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Brazil.
It was also the first K-drama to enter the Amazon Prime Video Top 10 in the US (2nd highest), Canada (1st highest), the UK (3rd highest), Germany (4th highest), Switzerland (2nd highest), Sweden (4th highest), the Netherlands (5th highest), Italy (3rd highest) and other US and European countries. It succeeded in entering the top 10.
The worldwide popularity of 'Marry My Husband' is attributed to the cathartic effect of regression and revenge. Forbes, a leading US media outlet, noted that 'Korean dramas in which the protagonists get a second chance through regression, alternative worlds and reincarnation have recently gained great popularity' and introduced 'Marry My Husband' as a major case study.
The renowned British magazine NME analyzed the factors behind the popularity of the drama as 'immensely addictive', 'a reincarnation melodrama that tells a story of revenge through regression' and 'satisfies viewers by clearly providing what they want'.
Park Min-young, who played Kang Ji-won in the drama, said of the drama's global box office: 'I don't know what to do with the overwhelming love of the viewers not only in Korea but all over the world. The character of Kang Ji-won in 'Marry My Husband' will remain as an unforgettable character for me for the rest of my life," she said, "I hope to meet the global audience again with better works and acting in the future.
Supported by its popularity, the 'Marry My Husband' production team and cast plan to go on a five-day, three-night reward holiday to Vietnam at the beginning of March. The four lead actors, including Park Min-yong, Na In-woo, Lee Yi-kyung and Song Ha-yun, will also participate. Studio Dragon and DK E&M, which were in charge of planning and production, prepared this event to encourage the actors and staff who participated in the film.
The producer responsible for Marry My Husband, Studio Dragon's PD Song Ja-young, said: 'We discovered the original story in 2020 and started filming in June 2023, but we had to end our long journey of three years and nine months. The reward holiday will be a place for the production team and cast who struggled together to unite and hope that they can get together again for another production".
According to Nielsen Korea, an organization specializing in audience knowledge research, 'Marry My Husband' recorded viewership ratings of up to 14% on a national household basis during its broadcast period.
In the TV-OTT general drama topicality survey for the third week of February announced on FUNdex, the official platform of Good Data Corporation, an organization specializing in K-content competitiveness research, 'Marry My Husband' has been ranked No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks. Actress Park Min-yong also ranked top in the performer buzz category for seven consecutive weeks, proving the hot popularity that flooded in during the broadcast period.
