The South Korean Ministry of Education (equivalent to Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) compiled data on the current status of applications for leave of absence from medical school students and found that as of the previous day, the cumulative number of applications for leave of absence had exceeded 9,000.
According to the Ministry of Education on the 24th, a total of 415 medical students from 12 schools submitted new leave applications between the 22nd and 23rd.
The number of students who withdrew their applications for leave of absence during this period was four. The total number of valid applications for leave of absence since the Ministry of Education began compiling data on the 19th of last month is now 9,109.
The number of medical students refusing to attend classes was confirmed to be eight schools.
The Ministry of Education said, "After checking with 40 universities, we found that joint leave of absence is not permitted.
"Eight universities have confirmed that students have refused to attend classes, and these universities are making efforts to ensure that academic affairs are conducted normally, including by holding interviews with students and providing explanations," the ministry said.
