Yoon Hee-keun, Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, said, ”We will investigate and have zero tolerance for election fraud... We will support the inspection of illegal cameras” (South Korea)
Yoon Hee-keun, Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, said on the 4th, "We will strengthen our intelligence gathering activities on cases of possible election fraud, such as voting irregularities and obstruction of ballot box transport, and will implement the principle of zero tolerance."
"We will conduct a thorough investigation in accordance with the law," he said. Yoon held a "safe and sound" press conference at the city hall in Migeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the day before the early voting day for the 22nd National Assembly elections.
Yoon made the remarks while presiding over a national command online meeting to support a smooth election.
"The situation is different from previous years as cases of illegal camera installations at polling stations have raised fears of election fraud, making the police's responsibility more crucial than ever," he said.
He added, "The police will mobilize all its organizational capabilities to actively support the public so that they can exercise their right to vote with peace of mind."
At the request of the Election Management Commission, the police will assist in inspections of advance polling stations and main polling stations across the country to see if any illegal cameras have been installed.
In addition, police officers will be present during all the transport of advance ballots, not just for the actual voting.
They will also work to maintain public order around polling stations, such as by preventing YouTubers from trying to break into polling stations and other disturbances in the surrounding area.
Furthermore, we will proactively prevent and block attempts to harm key figures in political parties, and will take firm action against election violence crimes, such as terrorism, against election officials.
The government has also established a policy to respond swiftly and strictly to the five major election crimes and fake news that utilizes deep fakes.
Yoon said, "We will hold those who have engaged in illegal activities accountable even after the election is over.
The situation will be directly managed by the chiefs of city and provincial police agencies and police stations, and police forces will be concentrated, including by issuing emergency shifts during the advance voting and main voting periods."
