According to the resident registration statistics of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of Korea, the number of single-person households in Korea is 10,021,413, exceeding 10 million households for the first time in March this year.
The number of single-person households in March accounted for 41.8% of the total number of households, which was 24,002,008, meaning that at least two out of five households were made up of people living alone.
By age (in 10-year intervals), the largest number of households were those aged 60-69 with 1,851,705 households, followed by those aged 30-29 with 1,684,651 and those aged 50-59 with 1,640,482.
In addition, those aged 70 or older made up a large proportion of the total at 1,980,297 households. By gender, there were 5,154,408 male one-person households, compared with 4,867,005 female one-person households.
The South Korean government believes that the proportion of single-person households is increasing due to an increase in the number of elderly people and unmarried people living alone, and is exploring various policies for single-person households.
We are exploring policies and other measures that prioritize solving the issues of food, clothing, and shelter.
