Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party of Korea, said the landslide victory in the recent general election was "not a victory for the Democratic Party, but a great victory for our people."
He also emphasized that "Both the ruling and opposition parties must join forces to resolve the crisis in the public economy." On the 11th, Lee spoke at the "Together We Stand Together" event held at the Democratic Party building in Yeouido, Seoul.
At the 12th Joint Central Election Strategy Committee Meeting and Closing Ceremony of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Alliance for Party of Japan, he said, "I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the support and encouragement that helped us exceed our goal."
As of 10:32 a.m. today, 100% of the votes were counted nationwide for the 22nd National Assembly elections. The Democratic Party of Korea won 161 seats in regional districts, while its satellite party, the Democratic Alliance of Korea, won 14 seats in the proportional representation districts.
Lee said, "Our Democratic Party will do its utmost to honor the important will of the people with each and every vote. We will do our best to ease the suffering of the people and resolve the national crisis."
"I will do my best to ensure that our 22nd Diet takes the lead in protecting the people today and opening up a better tomorrow for the people," he said.
"I also express my deep gratitude to the candidates, campaign staff and party members who have done their best across the country.
"I would like to express my gratitude to you all. Regardless of whether you won or lost the election, your dedication and hard work have laid the foundation for the victory of the people," he said.
"Even after the election, we must always listen to the voices of the people with a humble attitude. I will keep the principle of popular sovereignty in my heart and make sure to put it into practice in my daily political activities," he said.
In closing, Lee said, "The election is over. The ruling and opposition parties must work together to resolve the economic crisis. The Democratic Party must work together to resolve the problems facing the people's livelihood.
"I will take an active lead in resolving these issues. I will definitely live up to the people's expectations and support with people's politics that will save the Republic of Korea."
