A man killed his girlfriend, served 10 years in prison, and killed another girlfriend two years after being released - South Korea
A man in his 60s who was imprisoned for murdering his girlfriend is now on trial for murdering another girlfriend two years after being released from prison. The first-instance court sentenced him to 25 years in prison, but the prosecution appealed, arguing that the sentence was too light.
On the 23rd, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office announced that it had appealed the decision of Defendant A (64), who was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the first trial on charges of murder and other crimes.
Defendant A is accused of strangling his girlfriend, Ms. B, a woman in her 50s, to death at a motel in Namdong-gu, Incheon, around 11 p.m. on October 13 last year.
The next morning, Defendant A reported to the police, "I killed someone," and then attempted suicide by taking poison. He was found collapsed in his motel room and was treated at a hospital.
During police investigation, defendant A said, "We had an argument over a sexual relationship and I accidentally strangled her." The prosecution said, "The defendant had previously served 10 years in prison for killing a woman he was dating.
"Despite this, two years after his release he committed a murder that was extremely similar to his previous crimes," the court said, explaining the reason for the appeal, saying, "The case is extremely serious."
He also said, "The victim's family is also petitioning for severe punishment for the defendant," and "We will appeal to get a heavier sentence."
In the first instance, the prosecution sought life imprisonment for Defendant A and requested the court to require him to wear an electronic ankle strap (a location tracking device) for 30 years.
