The previous day, the Democratic Party, together with the People's Power, passed the Itaewon Special Assembly, which had been passed by the opposition party Exclusive in January.
The two sides agreed to amend parts of the law, marking the first time that a bill that President Yoon Seok-youl has exercised his right to request a reconsideration (veto) has been returned to the National Assembly for processing.
According to the agreement between the ruling and opposition parties, the special investigative committee will be made up of nine members, including one chairman, four members of the People's Power Party, and four members of the Democratic Party. Its activities will last for up to one year.
The ruling and opposition parties were at odds until the very end over the method of investigation of the special investigation committee, but as the ruling party had argued, the special investigation committee's "authority to investigate on its own initiative" was not allowed.
However, the ruling and opposition parties decided to remove the "Special Prosecutor's Act on Suspicion of External Pressure in the Investigation of the Death of a Wounded Marine Corps Soldier" and the "Special Act on Support for Victims of Jeonse Fraud and Housing Stability."
The bill to amend the Constitution has not yet been agreed upon. The Democratic Party plans to persuade National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo to move it through even if it means submitting it to the plenary session. The People's Power Party has not agreed to it, and there is no chance of forcing it through.
In this case, it is expected that they will not attend the plenary session.
