"The Axe" is based on the novel "The Axe" by Donald Westlake. Director Park Chan-wook tried to adapt the novel into a Hollywood movie in 2017, but the production was cancelled.
There is a history of failure. Previously, in 2005, the Spanish director Costa Gavras made a film titled "Axe: A Dangerous Guide to Getting a Job," starring Park Chan-woo.
Director Koo plans to remake the film. In particular, director Park Chan-wook called it "my life's project" during an open talk with director Costa Gavras at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival.
"I want to make it someday and make it my masterpiece," he said. "The Axe" is about a middle-class man who loses his job after showing an insane obsession with his boss at work whom he envies, and then fails to find another job and becomes a potential rival.
The story revolves around killing people in various ways. Lee Byung Hun and Son Yeji have been cast as the male and female protagonists.
Lee Byung Hun worked with director Park Chan Wook on the 2000 film "JSA."
It will be the first time in 20 years that Song Ye-jin will work with director Park Chan-wook.
In particular, since the JTBCTV series "39 Years Old" ended in March 2022, Seo has been focusing on raising her child after marrying actor HyunBin and giving birth.
The return of Song Ye-ji to his main career has drawn much attention. Director Park Chan-wook will be teaming up with Korea's best actor Lee Byung-hun and Song Ye-ji to carry out his life's work.
As a result, expectations are rising.
