Wi Seong-hwan, who lives in Seoul, received a call from the Busan Police Substation informing him that he had a large check in his custody.
One check for 30 million won (approximately 3.41 million yen) and one check for 20 million won (approximately 2.27 million yen)
One of the checks was found in the clothes of a father who had died two years ago and was reported as lost by someone. Cha Sang-jae, who lives in Busan, found the check by chance and reported it to Saha Police Station.
In gratitude, Ui offered to give Cha a monetary reward, but Cha flatly refused.
According to the Lost Property Law, finders of lost property are entitled to a reward of 5 to 20 percent of the amount.
Wi repeatedly tried to persuade him to accept the minimum honorarium of 2.5 million won (US$2,600).
After repeated suggestions, Cha suggested to Ui that he donate the reward money.
In the end, Ui accepted Cha's request and paid 3.5 million won (approximately 390,000 yen) - an additional 1 million won to the 2.5 million won he had been hoping for as a reward - to the Saha-gu office at the end of last month.
The donor's name was changed to Cha Sang-jae, the person who found the item. When Cha was contacted by the district office, he requested that the donor's name be changed to the original owner of the check.
The name and occupation of the person who found the check were not disclosed. A Saha-gu official said, "We were touched by the sight of the owner and the finder of the check asking each other to make donations in each other's names.
"We have added Cha Sang-jae to our list of donors," he said. Meanwhile, Saha-gu plans to donate 3.5 million won to the orphanage, Air Won.
