”10 fingers cut off” - Was ”torture” involved in murder of Korean tourist in Thailand? - Korea
Thai police are investigating whether the suspects involved in the kidnapping and murder of a Korean tourist in Pattaya, Thailand, may have tortured him. The victim had 10 missing fingers when he was found.
All of the fingers were missing, but Thai police believe that if the victim's fingers had been amputated before his death, torture charges could be laid.
According to the Thai Broadcasting System (TPBS) on the 12th (local time), Deputy Police Commissioner Nopasin Pursawat held a press conference at Makkasa on the same day.
Thai police held a meeting at the police station to discuss the progress of the full-scale investigation. Two of the three suspects have fled to South Korea and a nearby country, respectively, while the remaining one is still in Thailand.
We are aware of this. Suspect A (male, in his 20s), who fled to South Korea on the 9th of this month, was arrested on the 12th at around 7:46 pm in Chonbuk.
The victim, Mr. B (34, male), entered Thailand on the 30th of last month for tourism in Pattaya. Mr. B, who stayed at a hotel, had been in Bangkok until the 2nd of this month.
He was spotted at a club and was captured on CCTV following two Korean men towards Pattaya in the early hours of the 3rd. The three got into a truck and then headed towards Mapratti in Pattaya.
The two suspects were seen buying a 200-liter black drum at a nearby store at around 3:10 p.m. on the same day. Thai police said that B had already died at the time.
The suspects then left the lodgings at around 9 p.m. on the 4th, draping a black cloth over the truck. Thai police said the suspects parked the truck near a reservoir for about an hour before returning to the lodgings.
On the 7th, the suspects sent a submersible into the reservoir and found the body. They then sent a message to B's mother saying, "B dumped drugs into the water and caused damage. We are offering 3 million baht (approximately 12.69 million yen) as a ransom."
If you don't pay, your son will be killed." B's mother immediately reported the matter to the Korean Embassy in Thailand, and the Thai police began investigating the disappearance of B, leading to the suspects' arrest.
The crime was revealed. It is believed that the suspects did not know B. TPBS said, "We must wait for the forensic results to determine how the victim's finger was cut."
He also interpreted that "if the fingers were amputated before death, this could be seen as an act of torture, and if it was done after death, it may have been intended to make identification more difficult."
Meanwhile, Thai police believe that the suspects carried out the crime with meticulous planning. One of the suspects has entered Thailand eight times since 2020 and is believed to be familiar with Thailand's geography.
