Police report weapon brandishing incident, but ”it's the weekend”...Subsequent ”arson” incident leaves victim in critical condition - Korea
Following an incident in which a man in his 60s set fire to the home of his common-law wife, leaving the victim seriously injured, it has been confirmed that the victim had reported the man to the police three times for assault and brandishing a weapon.
It was reported that the police said it was difficult to take action because it was the weekend. On the 11th of this month, a six-year-old man set fire to an exclusive apartment in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, seriously injuring a woman in his common-law marriage.
A male suspect, A, was arrested. He is suspected of setting fire to an exclusive apartment building in Hwaseong City at around 10:10 pm on the 9th of this month, severely injuring a woman in her 60s, B, who was inside.
At the time, police received a report from Mr. B that "someone had entered the house," and when they responded to the house, smoke was already present at the scene.
Although the fire was put out by fire authorities 20 minutes later, Mr. B, who was inside the house, went into cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
B is currently in a critical condition. On the day of the crime, A was found to have received a temporary measure from the court, including a prohibition on approaching B within 100 meters.
On the 22nd of last month, he assaulted Mr. B and broke his arm, and on the 30th, he exhibited abnormal behavior by breaking into Mr. B's home while he was out and stabbing a knife into his pillow.
After receiving the report, the police hospitalized suspect A, but after he left the hospital on the 4th of this month, he again assaulted B.
According to SBS, the police responded by saying that it was difficult to separate them because it was the weekend.
"Why are they suddenly kicking them out when they were there?" he said. "We will immediately apply for (temporary measures), but it is difficult now because of the weekend."
The police applied for temporary measures on the 8th of this month, four days after the incident, and the court approved it the next day.
The suspect's arson could not be prevented. The victim said, "It's unfortunate that the police could not have taken stronger measures or separated the buildings more thoroughly."
On the other hand, the police did not apply for an arrest warrant for suspect A despite the repeated assaults, because of the temporary measures.
The government explained that it was trying to deal with the issue of his custody after applying for his release.
