Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung: ”Some party members may feel sad, but we must think about the bigger picture” - calming internal party conflict after Choo Mi-ae was dropped from the running for speaker of the National Assembly (South Korea)
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, has begun trying to appease hard-line party members who are upset over Democratic Party president Choo Mi-ae's withdrawal from the running for speaker of the National Assembly.
On the 19th, Chairman Lee attended a party member conference held at the Daejeon Convention Center and said, "Even if we don't agree with each other, we will work together to achieve one big goal.
We need to overcome our differences and move forward. I'm sure there are many party members who feel lonely and dissatisfied with the party these days, but we must always think about the bigger picture."
The remarks came after some hard-line party members expressed their resentment and expressed their intention to leave the party after Choo Mi-ae, who is said to have secured Lee's support, lost the recent primary election for the National Assembly Speaker candidate.
It is analyzed that this was done in consideration of the situation where conflicts are growing, with Lee even expressing his intention to do so.
"We can question and criticize each other," he said, but called for harmony within the party, saying, "However, if we simply assume that the other person's opinion is wrong and ignore it, then that's the end of it."
On the same day, the management team of Lee's online fan cafe, Jae Myung Village, also said, "We are trying to find the lawmakers (who did not support the candidate)."
The party also posted a public notice stating, "We will take disciplinary measures against any member who posts such statements or posts stating that they will leave the party."
"If you have any complaints, please don't pay your party dues. If you leave the party, it will be difficult to rejoin," he said with a laugh. "It is at times like these that I would be grateful if you could show that you are taking responsibility for the party."
However, Chairman Lee reiterated his request, saying, "In this general election, the Democratic Party achieved an electoral revolution through a revolution in the nomination process. This was possible thanks to the power of our party members. We have doubled the number of party members,
"The power of the party members should also be doubled. Our intention to place importance on the voices of party members in running the party remains unchanged."
