South Korea's Minister of Industry meets with U.S. think tank: ”When making recommendations to the U.S. government, please consider the position of our allies”
South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, "Minister Ahn Deok-keun held a meeting with Jason Matheny, president of the US think tank RAND Corporation, at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on the 24th.
"During the meeting, we discussed Korea's response to a trade environment in which technological and security competition among major countries and national prioritization policies are becoming more severe," he said.
RAND Corporation is a large think tank founded in 1948 with over 2,000 employees, and is considered one of the top think tanks in the United States in the fields of defense and security.
As a result, they are able to provide a wide range of ideas to the U.S. government's policy-making process based on their expertise in defense, technology, and security.
The RAND delegation's visit to Korea is intended to meet with Korean companies and experts and to promote the development of the defense, technology and security fields.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. The meeting included the recently announced proposal by the United States to impose additional tariffs on Chinese products and China's response to the US Inflation Control Act (IRA).
The impact of major trade issues, such as the World Trade Organization lawsuit, on Korea and strategies to deal with them were discussed. Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn said, "Until now, Korea has not been able to comply with the IRA and the semiconductor law in the United States.
"We have been working to ensure that Korean companies are not hindered by policies that support investment in China, and that a stable business environment is guaranteed for Korean companies that have expanded into China or have supply chains connected to China," he said.
He continued, "In the future, when RAND Corporation makes technology and security policy recommendations to the U.S. government, we would like them to take into account the positions of major allies, who must keep in mind the overall relationship between the United States and China.
" he demanded.
