On May 1, the Ulsan GPS was running two 400-megawatt gas turbines, burning LNG fuel.
The LNG being used was the first that was received by the Korean Energy Terminal (KET) in April. This marks the successful linking of the terminal with the power generation infrastructure.
Construction of Ulsan GPS began in March 2022 with SK Gas investing 1.4 trillion won (about 157.811 billion yen). The generating capacity is 1.2 gigawatts.
The company will receive 900,000 to 1 million tons of LNG per year from KET. Ulsan GPS is also equipped with the latest high-efficiency equipment. Its plans to reduce environmental pollutants and introduce carbon-free energy sources have been approved.
In 2022, the company became the first Korean gas-fired combined cycle power plant to receive the highest grade of G1 in the green finance category of the Korea Corporate Assessment Service's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) certification.
In 2024, SK Gas will begin comprehensive trial operations, including operating gas turbines and steam turbines using LPG fuel at Ulsan GPS.
The company plans to start commercial operation of LNG power generation during the June-December period.
