"We are constantly on alert," Deputy Secretary Campbell said at a meeting with the Stimson Center, a Washington, D.C. think tank, on the same day.
In response to a question about the possibility of North Korea launching a more serious provocation than the dirty balloon,
"We remain vigilant for potential provocations or actions against our allies," he said. "We are closely monitoring what is happening in Pyongyang," Campbell said.
"There have been changes in North Korea's policies and approaches, and we are closely examining them," he said. He added that regarding the possibility of a potential provocation by North Korea, "We are closely coordinating with South Korea."
"We believe that the South Korean government is appropriately prepared for a range of potential provocations, and we are in close partnership with the South Korean government in these efforts," he said.
"We are discussing with South Korea and Japan various scenarios and areas for more integration and closer coordination," he added.
