A dog in Korea could only watch as his friend was boiled in a pot
A man in his 60s has been arrested and is under investigation for allegedly illegally killing a dog he had kept at home for meat. According to the Jeju Dongbu Police Station in South Korea, the man was arrested on the 1st of this month.
He is accused of illegally disposing of a dog in an orchard in Jeju City on the morning of the 2nd. When an official from the Abandoned Dog Rescue Center, an animal protection organization that received the report, visited the scene, the dog had already been illegally disposed of.
At the scene, there was an axe believed to have been used in the attack. An animal protection group official said, "When we arrived at the scene, one of the dogs was already in the pot. We saw everything right in front of our eyes.
The other dogs that were there couldn't move and were just shivering," he said. During police investigation, the man said, "I wasn't feeling well, so I made dog meat into a soup called 'boshintang' (a nutritious soup made with dog meat) and ate it.
In February of this year, South Korea enacted the "Special Act on the End of Dog Meat Production," which banned the keeping, slaughtering, distributing, and selling of dogs for the purpose of eating.
If a person destroys a dog for the purpose of eating it, he or she will be sentenced to imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won (approximately US$30,000); if the person keeps, breeds or distributes the dog, he or she will be sentenced to imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million won (approximately US$20,000).
The penalty provisions will come into effect in 2027, three years after the law is promulgated.
