”Penalties for dating violence should be increased” - More than 50,000 people sign petition by family members of victims in South Korea
This is a national petition filed by the victim's family demanding improvements to the dating violence system in response to the so-called "Geoje dating violence incident" that occurred in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province in April.
The number of signatures exceeded 50,000. On the 18th, the National Assembly's National Signature Petition Board posted a petition titled "Request for Improvement of the Dating Violence System" by Ms. B, the mother of Ms. A, a woman in her 20s who died as a result of dating violence.
As of this day, some 53,000 people have signed the "Petition Regarding the National Assembly's Consent" petition. If the petition reaches 50,000 signatures within 30 days of its publication on the website, it will be forwarded to the relevant standing committee of the National Assembly.
Petitions that are appropriate for the government or the National Assembly to process after being examined by a standing committee are considered to be legislative activities. In her petition, B wrote, "Since I lost my daughter, I have realized how horrible the world is, and I want to continue to
"I am extremely worried and scared about how I will raise the children I have left behind. The assailant even knew our address, and it has left my family physically and mentally exhausted, so in the end we had no choice but to move," she said.
He continued, "The responsibility of Geoje police for releasing the perpetrator must be made clear, and the investigation manual for dating violence must be completely revised. The police have been a bystander to the perpetrator's violence and have practically encouraged it.
"When the police arrested the perpetrator, they warned him, 'Please think about the perpetrator's life,' which broke my heart," he said.
"We demand that the punishment for this crime be increased to the same level as murder. In the case of stalking crimes, if the perpetrator is an acquaintance, we also demand that the sentence be increased."
Prior to this, on April 1, Ms. A was assaulted by her former assailant at her residence in Geoje City, and suffered traumatic subdural hemorrhage and other injuries that will take six weeks to heal.
He was diagnosed with sepsis and received treatment at a hospital, but died of multiple organ failure caused by sepsis. The National Forensic Service said last month that "Mr. A is highly likely to have died from complications from a head injury."
The incident was reported to the police, and on the 30th of last month, the prosecutor's office arrested and indicted the assailant on charges of assault resulting in death and other offences.
