The unemployment rate for 9-year-olds fell 0.5 percentage points to 6.6%, while the unemployment rate for those aged 30 to 59 remained unchanged from the previous month at 4.0%. Both figures exclude students enrolled in school.
The unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds has fallen for two consecutive months. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on the 17th of this month, the number of unemployed people surveyed nationwide in urban and rural areas in the first five months of this year was 1.2%.
The average unemployment rate was 5.1%, down 0.3 percentage points from the same period last year. The unemployment rate for May alone was 5%, unchanged from the previous month, but down 0.2 percentage points from the same month last year.
"China's economy continued to recover in May, with the labour market showing some activity and employment generally stable," spokeswoman Liu Aihua said.
On the other hand, the burden on employment remains and policies to stabilize employment need to be strengthened, it said.
