South Korea: Male teacher who sexually abused 11 male students sentenced to 10 years in prison... Prosecutors appeal

On the 20th, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office announced that it would appeal against the first-instance ruling that had sentenced a male middle school teacher (33 years old) to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing a male student.
The prosecution said, "The defendant (male teacher) forgot his duties and responsibilities as a teacher and used his superior position over students to commit sexual crimes, sexually abusing 11 victims over a period of about four years.
"The case is serious and the nature of the crime is poor, as it involved abuse and caused irreparable mental pain to a young person still in his developmental years," the court said, explaining, "We have appealed in order to seek a heavier sentence."
He continued, "Considering the fact that the victims want the defendant to be severely punished, and the duration and method of the defendant's crimes, there is a clear risk that he will offend again."
On the 18th, in the first hearing, the court sentenced the defendant to 10 years in prison, and ordered him to complete 40 hours of sexual assault treatment and child abuse treatment programs, as well as to disclose information.
He was given a three-year notice and was ordered to be restricted from working in organizations related to children, adolescents, and people with disabilities for 10 years. In addition, the request for an order to wear an electronic device was dismissed, citing "insufficient evidence of the risk of reoffending."
At the trial on the 5th of this month, the prosecution requested, "We would like to see the defendant sentenced to 14 years in prison, with 20 years of information disclosure and notification, work restrictions, and 20 years of wearing electronic devices."
The defendant worked as a part-time teacher at a middle school in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, and sexually abused 11 students between November 2019 and October last year.
The two men were arrested and indicted on charges of sexually abusing other students under the Juvenile Sexual Protection Act. The victims were said to have been around 14 to 15 years old at the time of the incident.
