Actor Yeo Jin Goo expressed his desire to be praised for showing a new side of himself. In the movie "Hijack," Yeo Jin Goo took on the role of a villain for the first time. He was so engrossed in the role that he was no longer able to express himself as he had done before.
In a recent interview with Herald POP at a cafe in Seogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul,
Yeo Jin Goo expressed her apologies to Ha Jung Woo. "Hijack" is a film that depicts the extreme situation that unfolds when a passenger plane is hijacked in the sky above the Republic of Korea in 1971.
Ha Jung Woo had his eye on Yeo Jin Goo since the TVING original show "Ticketing with Both Feet" in order to cast her.
"(Ha Jung Woo) was on a plane going to New Zealand when I was told that there was a movie called 'Hijacking' and I was writing a script for it.
I read it the night I arrived in New Zealand. I told them it was interesting, and after I returned to the country, I decided to appear in the show.
He continued, "The script didn't go into detail about Yong Dae's emotions at every moment, so I had a lot of questions like, 'Why?'
I was intrigued by the energy that Yong Dae had to show in the limited space he was in, and I wondered if he would be able to use that energy well.
"Even though I was getting older, I had a strong desire to take on a new challenge, so I wanted to do it," he added. Yeo Jin Goo plays the role of hijacker Yong-dae. Yong-dae is a character who is a member of the group of people abducted by North Korea.
After seeing the news that the North Koreans are treating him like heroes, he decides to hijack a plane and go to North Korea. This is a dramatic transformation for Yeo Jin Goo, who usually has an image of a serious young man.
She made use of the white-sclera eye syndrome that she had been trying to hide. "Actually, I have white-sclera eye syndrome, so if I lift my eyes up just a little bit, I look rough. On the set, there were times when I would look down or look away.
This time, I looked up as much as I could. I didn't know that my eyes had so much white, or that my irises were so small. It was a new experience for me. At times, I wondered if I was being too scary."
He was also wary of any aspects of the character that could be romanticized. "I realized that villains are people too. Of all the roles I've played so far, this one felt the most like a person who wanted to live.
There were times when I felt like I didn't have a chance. I was worried about whether it would be okay to have Yongdae's story, but the director and writers created Yongdae's story based on the article that was published at the time. I was also immersed in Yongdae.
Above all, Yeo Jin Goo said that when acting out action scenes with Ha Jung Woo in this film, he was unable to control his emotions and was in awe of the action scenes.
"I had to perform the action scenes in a small space, and the emotions involved in the role were high, so I often intimidated my seniors, even though I kept my cool.
I actually hit my senior many times. I acted really realistically. My senior advised me, "I know you were immersed in the situation, but you have to control your emotions as a professional."
I was scolded once, but I am grateful that you always looked at me with kind eyes. It was the first time that I was so emotionally unstable, and I was surprised.
Yeo Jin Goo has broadened his acting horizons through "Hijack." He also said he would like to play another villain role in the future.
"Many people said, 'I'm surprised that this actor who has always played the role of a good, serious guy is taking on a new challenge.
I'm glad when people think, "I changed my style but it's pretty good." I'm extremely happy when people say they saw a new expression and face of Yeo Jin Goo. After playing a villain once, I want to do more villains next time.
I wanted to try playing a villain with a story or a truly ruthless villain. If the CEOs of the production company knew that Jin Goo could play a role like that, I would be happy to try.
Baru (laughs).”
