”Let's focus on compensation”... 31 people killed and injured in fire at Arisel appoints largest law firm (South Korea)
Aricell, a primary battery manufacturer in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, which suffered 31 deaths and injuries in a fire, has appointed Kim & Chang, the largest law firm in the country, as its defense lawyer and filed suit against the police.
In response to criticism over this, Park Jun-eon, the son of Aricell's CEO Park Seung-kwang, said, "We are not trying to avoid legal responsibility.
"We have no intention of shortening or reducing the investigation process," Park said, according to Yonhap News Agency on the 27th. "We will continue to focus on providing compensation to the bereaved families."
"We only appointed a legal team to appoint them as legal representatives," he explained. On the afternoon of the same day, three days after the fire, Park and the head of the headquarters met with the bereaved families for the first time to apologize.
The two visited the waiting room for bereaved families at the Norim Center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and met with some of the bereaved families and bowed to them.
Park said, "This tragedy is something that I and my company will have to live with for the rest of our lives.
"We think that we should apologize to them," he said, "and we will make arrangements for the funeral as soon as possible." He continued, "We know that apologizing a hundred or a thousand times will not be enough," but "we are doing our best to prepare.
I am truly sorry," he added. Previously, Park and his son had visited the Noorim Center to apologize, but "what's the point in apologizing now?"
The two men, who had been waiting, were stopped by the bereaved families. As they tried to turn back, they encountered many Chinese bereaved families in the parking lot who demanded an apology, and they headed back to the waiting room for the bereaved families.
Park knelt down in front of the family, who sat down and pleaded for the return of their child, but was powerless to comfort their anger and sorrow.
One of the family members fainted when he saw the body laid out in the funeral home after the autopsy and was taken away in an ambulance.
