Opening of the ”5/18 Gwangju” and ”4/3 Jeju” National Trauma Healing Center
The National Center for Healing Trauma from State Violence will open in Gwangju and Jeju to help victims and their families recover from state violence, hostile forces, and terrorist organizations.
On the 30th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of South Korea announced that the National Violence Trauma Healing Center will hold an inauguration ceremony on the 1st and begin operations.
It was established based on the "Act on the Establishment and Operation of the National Violence Trauma Healing Center" with the aim of healing the psychological pain of victims and their families.
Taking into consideration the symbolism of the number 3, a model healing project will be carried out in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province from 2020, and will now be officially launched.
The inauguration ceremony for the Gwangju Healing Center was attended by Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety Go Ki-dong, Mayor of Gwangju Kang Gi-jo, and other officials.
The inauguration ceremony for the Jeju Healing Center was attended by Mayor Kim Min-Jae of the Ministry of Interior and Safety, Governor Oh Young-Hoon of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and other relevant members of the 4/3 Bereaved Families Association.
The Gwangju Healing Center was completed in April this year with a total investment of 10.7 billion won (approximately 1.2 billion yen) and has one basement floor and three aboveground floors. The first floor is a counseling room and office space, the second floor is a multipurpose space, and the third floor is a multipurpose space.
The Jeju Healing Center is built with one basement floor and two above ground floors. The healing center offers mental and physical healing programs.
The government plans to strengthen one-on-one counseling services, social healing programs, and home visit healing services, as well as promote projects to identify unregistered victims.
Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min said, "We hope that the launch of the National Trauma Healing Center will enable victims and their families to receive healing services in a comfortable and stable environment."
"We will actively support these people so that they can overcome their mental and physical difficulties and return to their normal lives," the company said.
