Driver's wife in Seoul accident: ”I'm sorry...I only found out about the fatalities on the news”

A car went the wrong way and crashed into a sidewalk near City Hall Station in Seoul, killing 13 people. The wife of a passenger in the car who caused the accident, a woman in her 60s, said, "I learned about the deaths from the news.
I am truly sorry to the bereaved family." Ms. A told the Chosun Ilbo on the 2nd that she is the wife of the driver who caused the accident, and said, "This is the first time in my 50 years of life that something like this has happened."
"My husband was a driver and had never been involved in a collision before, so I never dreamed he would get into an accident like this," she said.
Ms. A and her husband attended the celebration of her brother's 70th birthday at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul.
He said that he had been driving home when the accident occurred and that he had not been drinking at the time. Prior to this, on the day of the accident, a woman who was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the accident had not provided any first aid in the early stages of the accident.
Witnesses to the accident said the woman "was not interested in helping anyone, she was only concerned about the driver" and "If she had just stopped the bleeding quickly, at least one person could have been saved."
Regarding this suspicion, Mr. A said, "I was in a pinch at the time," and added, "I was sitting next to him, but I was scared and didn't really understand what was going on. I didn't see the news that someone had died."
"I only found out when I saw it," he said. "I'm really sorry to the bereaved families, and I don't know what to say to the deceased," he said, adding, "I'll apologize even if I have to bow my head."
At around 9:28 pm on the 1st, a car driven by a 68-year-old man ran onto the sidewalk at an intersection near City Hall Station, killing nine people and injuring four.
The driver who caused the accident was immediately arrested by the police who were dispatched to the scene, and the cause of the accident was the sudden acceleration of the car.
Police investigations have determined that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol, and there has been no confirmation of drug use or the possibility of drowsy driving.
Meanwhile, the police said they would conduct a swift and thorough investigation based on the driver's statement, testimony from witnesses, and the results of on-site investigations.
