Elementary school student slaps vice principal on the cheek... South Korea's education office accuses mother of ”child abuse”
The police have taken temporary measures to provide counseling and education to the mother of a student attending an elementary school in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, which has become a problem in South Korea for "assault on a vice principal."
The city of Jeonju also requested a child protection order from the court to isolate the student from her abusive mother. On the 2nd, the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Police Agency reported that the student's mother had filed a "temporary measure" last week.
According to Article 19 of the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes, judges may impose temporary measures (1 to 7) on child abusers in order to protect the victimized child.
The fifth of these is a punishment to "receive counseling and education from a child protection specialist agency." The third-grader in question was a student who tried to leave school without permission on the morning of the 3rd of last month.
However, when the vice principal stopped him in the hallway, he started verbally abusing the principal, slapping him on the cheek several times, biting his arm and spitting on him. The student's mother, who had come to the school afterwards, also assaulted the homeroom teacher.
It was revealed that the student had previously caused problems at other schools and had transferred schools several times in the past year. The case has caused controversy in South Korea, and the Jeollabuk-do Education Office has accused the mother of being a "teacher".
The police plan to summon the mother for an investigation in the near future. The Jeonju city government said, "The student needs counseling and treatment, but the mother is not taking appropriate measures, and the situation is not improving."
The court determined that the student was "abusing his parents" and requested a "protection order for the victimized child" from the court.
