ソウル暴走事故…ドライブレコーダーには「おお、おお」という音声だけ=韓国
Seoul runaway accident... Only the sound of ”Oh, oh” was recorded on the dashcam = Korea
An audio recording from the dashcam of a car seized by police in connection with a wrong-way car accident at an intersection near City Hall Station in Seoul that left 13 people dead and injured confirms the car's sudden acceleration.
According to media reports on the 3rd, the video of the dashcam captured by the police from the car of the driver, Mr. Cha (68), immediately after the accident,
The video and audio were recorded from the moment Cha's car left the underground parking lot of the Westin Chosun Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, until the accident occurred and the car came to a stop.
Usually, in accidents where sudden acceleration is suspected, dashcam footage shows things like, "What's going on with the car?", "I have to stop. What should I do?", "The brakes aren't working."
Drivers and passengers are recorded saying things like, "Is it too late?" Lawyer Han Moon-cheol, who specializes in traffic accidents, also said on his YouTube channel yesterday, "When judging whether or not a car is accelerating too quickly,
"It's important to have audio recorded on the dashcam. If there's no clear audio, such as 'something's wrong with the car,' it's highly unlikely that the car was suddenly accelerated."
However, it was discovered that no such audio was recorded on Cha's car's dashcam.
The wife of Cha was reportedly not involved in any special conversations until just before the accident. The only sound recorded on the video was a surprised "oh, oh" sound made by the couple while driving.
As a result, the police reportedly concluded that it would be difficult to infer any defects in the vehicle, such as sudden acceleration, from the audio from the dashcam alone.
The Namdaemun Police Station in Seoul arrested Cha on the 2nd on charges of professional negligence resulting in death or injury under the Traffic Accident Special Act.
Cha is a city bus driver for a bus company in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, and is said to have had about 40 years of driving experience. Cha reportedly suffered broken ribs in the accident.
He was hospitalized with injuries including a broken leg. According to police, at around 9:30 pm on the 1st, the car Cha was driving left the underground parking lot of a hotel near City Hall Station and entered a four-lane one-way street.
The car then drove down a laneway in the wrong direction and crashed onto the sidewalk. Nine pedestrians were killed in the accident. Six died at the scene, and three were taken to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but were pronounced dead.
Six people were injured, including his wife, two pedestrians, and the drivers of the two cars that Cha's car collided with.
