During the same period, sales in the Korean market were 669,592 units, down 11.8%, while exports increased 2.2% to 3,312,358 units.
Hyundai Motor sold 2,061,883 vehicles, down 0.9%. Of these, sales in South Korea were 345,704, down 12.8%, while overseas sales were 3,061,883.
In Europe and the US, sales increased, with sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and hybrid vehicles (HVs) especially popular.
GM Korea was the only one of the five to see an increase in sales, increasing 25.7% to 269,422 units, giving the company its best performance since 2017.
Exports were the driving force behind the strong performance. Sales of the Chevrolet Trax crossover model totaled 255,965 units, up 31.0 percent. However, in South Korea, sales were down 29.4 percent to 13,457 units.
In order to overcome the slump in the Korean market in the July-December period, the automobile assembly industry is aiming to revive demand by releasing new cars and selling mid- to low-priced electric vehicles (EVs).
