Former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung resumes public rallies, says ”The nation's first duty is to protect the lives and safety of its citizens” on the damage caused by torrential rains (South Korea)
On the 10th, former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, who officially announced his candidacy for the next party leadership election, emphasized that "the state's first duty is to protect the lives and safety of its people."
That afternoon, Lee posted a message on his social media account with the title, "Protecting the lives of the people before disasters occurs is the reason for the existence of a nation," and said the following:
"Last night, heavy rains pounded the central and southern regions of the country, causing an elevator to flood, resulting in one death and the suspension of train services. I pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate accident," Lee said.
"I want the central and local governments to focus on preventing loss of life and to do everything in their power to prevent additional damage. I especially want to ask residents who live in semi-basements and those who live alone to take action," he wrote.
"We must pay special and thorough attention to the safety of our citizens who are vulnerable to disasters, including the elderly and those living in dangerous areas," he said.
Former Chairman Lee said, "We have already lost precious lives due to heavy rains over the past few years. It is too late to regret now.
"Such unforeseen circumstances must not be repeated," he wrote. He also added, "I would like to ask public servants on the front lines, who are at the forefront of preventing damage and restoring operations, to stay safe."
Since resigning from his position on the 24th of last month, Lee has been keeping a relatively quiet attitude. Apart from attending the National Assembly plenary session, local district party member meetings and the court where his criminal trial is currently underway,
He had virtually no public actions. He rarely posted on social media, where he usually expresses his opinions, but on this day he declared his candidacy for party leader, and in effect began to take public actions in earnest.
After announcing his candidacy, Lee completed the paperwork registration for the party's preliminary candidate for leadership.
