A call was made at a taekwondo dojo in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, reporting that a 5-year-old boy was not breathing. According to fire officials who responded to the call, the boy was in cardiac arrest.
He was administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and transported to hospital, where he remains unconscious and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
Police made an emergency arrest at the scene of a man in his 30s who was the head of the Taekwondo dojo.
According to the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency's Women and Youth Investigation Unit, the dojo director placed the child upside down between rolled up mats and left him there for 10 to 20 minutes.
Afterwards, the child was found not breathing, so the dojo chief took him to the clinic in the same building.
Police also confirmed that the dojo chief had deleted CCTV footage showing the incident in question.
The head of the dojo reportedly stated during police investigations that he had done it as a joke. The police are investigating the head of the dojo on suspicion of child abuse resulting in serious injury under the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.
They plan to file charges and apply for an arrest warrant.
