US court reduces sentence of Ethereum developer who traveled to North Korea without authorization from 63 months to 56 months
A U.S. district court has ordered the 63-month prison sentence of Ethereum developer Virgil Griffiths for allegedly violating sanctions reduced to 56 months, according to the News.
According to the report, Virgil Griffiths attended a virtual currency conference in Pyongyang in April 2019 without permission from the U.S. government, violating sanctions.
He was sentenced to 63 months in prison, three years of probation, and a fine of $100,000 (15.6 million yen) on charges of sexual assault and battery. The judge in charge said, "Taking into consideration the difficulties he experienced while incarcerated,
"I am considering the matter and ordering a partial reduction in the sentence," he said. Prior to this, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) had said, "We are unable to accept Virgil Griffith's request for a reduction in his sentence."
The order will take effect on August 2nd (local time), meaning Virgil Griffiths is scheduled to be released in January 2025.
