Seoul University professor accused of damaging pro-Palestinian posters - South Korea
An Israeli piano professor working at Seoul National University was charged with vandalizing a pro-Palestinian poster on campus.
On the 23rd, according to the Korean media "Herald Business", the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office announced that the Seoul University Music Department had been fined 1 million won (approximately 112,000 yen) on suspicion of
Professor A of the piano department at the university was summarily indicted on suspicion of property damage and fined 1 million won. Summary indictment in Korea is a procedure in which a fine or penalty is imposed without a formal trial and only through written review.
The sentence will be final unless the defendant or the court requests a formal trial. A is accused of damaging several pro-Palestine posters that were posted on a bulletin board at Seoul National University's Gwanak Campus in February this year.
The posters, which were posted by the Palestine Solidarity Club at the university at the time, included messages such as "We condemn the Israeli genocide and stand in solidarity with the Palestinians."
The Seoul Gwanak Police Station initially suspected A of property damage and sent the case to the prosecution. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office then investigated and filed a summary indictment on the 3rd of this month.
Mr. A has been teaching at the university since 2009 and has been active for over 15 years. He also won a bronze medal at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
He is also a world-renowned pianist who has won numerous awards at international competitions.
