LEPPENS recorded 12 wins and 3 losses (6 wins and 1 loss in singles and 6 wins and 2 losses in doubles), and Hida Orie recorded 12 wins and 4 losses in doubles alone, and both placed 1st and 2nd in the Most Wins Overall category in the first round.
In particular, LEPPENS ranked 3rd in the average division (2.000) and 2nd in the winning percentage division (80%), and was selected as the "PBA Team League 1st Round MVP" by the PBA Competition Steering Committee.
At the press conference held after the victory on the 23rd, leader Kang Dong-geun said, "It still doesn't feel real. After five seasons of team league, I never thought I would be so moved today."
"It's been a day since we won, but it still feels like a dream," commented LEPPENS, who won the MVP award, "It's an amazing result. We've steadily been working on our teamwork,
I learned a lot last season. Even though I was with strong players, we had some disappointing results so far. For me, it's great to have good results with my teammates.
"It really means a lot to me," said Hida Orie. "The guys at SK Rent-A-Car are like a family. We all worked together, taking advantage of our experience of coming in second last season.
"I'm really happy to have won the championship. This is just the beginning of the team league. We will do our best until the fifth round," he said. This was the first victory since the team was founded.
When asked about the reason, Kang Dong-geun said, "Only LEPPENS and I have been with SK Rental Car since its founding. It's a team league, but we're trying to solve the problems with individual ability alone.
We didn't trust each other enough, and I felt a lot of pressure in the team league. When things didn't go well, I thought it was my fault that we lost, and I struggled on my own. Fortunately, I was able to play the same team for two seasons.
"We've been able to maintain the same team structure, understand each other better, and strengthen our teamwork. We've also been able to achieve good results since last season, which has given us confidence."
When asked why she only participated in doubles in this round, Hida Orie said, "I'm not a doubles player.
It was not my will to participate in the doubles alone. The leader, Kang Dong-geun, asked me to participate in the doubles. Team results are more important than individual results. I have to accept the leader's instructions.
"I don't think I've been able to do it. I have really good chemistry with the other members who are competing in doubles with me. The results are good, so I'm very satisfied," she said with a bright smile.
The second round of the PBA team league will resume on September 25. Meanwhile, the PBA will hold an eight-day tournament starting on August 19.
The 2024 PBA-LPBA SY Bazzar Hanoi Open, the PBA's first overseas tour, will be held in Tony Hanoi.
