韓国環境省「14か所に “気候対応ダム”を建設」…「未来の “水需要”に備える」
South Korea's Ministry of Environment to ”build climate-friendly dams in 14 locations” to ”prepare for future water demand”
The South Korean government has announced 14 locations, including Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi Province and Yanggu in Gangwon Province, as candidate sites for "climate-smart dams."
"Climate-smart dams" are dams built to respond to extreme floods and droughts caused by the climate crisis and to prepare for future "water demands."
Environment Minister Kim Wan-seop announced the candidate sites for the climate-smart dam at the Government Seoul Complex on the 30th.
Since May last year, the Ministry of Environment has been evaluating flood risks and water shortages by river basin based on scientific data and identifying candidate sites for climate-friendly dams that need to be promoted in the national next-former.
The Ministry of Environment will then jointly examine the suitability of the proposed dam sites proposed by local governments and incorporate necessary dams into the proposed sites. Starting next month, the Ministry of Environment will hold local information sessions and public hearings to gather opinions from residents.
The government plans to actively explain the situation while communicating with relevant agencies and to hold thorough consultations. Minister of Environment Kim said, "The construction of the dam will take more than 10 years even if we start now, and in light of the recent climate crisis,
"We cannot afford to put this off any longer," he said, adding, "I will rack my brains together with the public to create a 'water receptacle' for future generations that can respond to the climate crisis we are facing."
