Daegu halts outdoor work at construction sites from 2pm to 5pm (South Korea)
On the 31st, the city of Daegu announced that it would be checking and inspecting the safety of workers at construction sites in the area, including suspending work between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. until the end of August.
The measure is intended to prevent heat-related illnesses among workers at construction sites, following the issuance of a heatwave warning on the 22nd.
In preparation for the extreme heat, the city of Daegu conducted safety inspections at 117 construction sites.
This will allow the distribution of safety leaflets that will help with measures against extreme heat at construction sites, and provide information on how to deal with heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses during extreme heat.
We checked whether rest periods were given between work hours, whether shade was provided, and whether various rest areas were provided. Heat illness is a condition in which symptoms such as headaches and dizziness appear when working for long periods in extreme heat.
If the symptoms are left untreated, heat stroke and heat exhaustion can occur. The basic rules for preventing heat illnesses are to drink fluids regularly, provide a shady rest area at the workplace, and take regular breaks.
In particular, it is very important for people who are susceptible to heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses (people with a history of heat-related illnesses, the elderly, etc.) to observe basic rules at construction sites exposed to extreme heat.
"The most important thing is to follow safety rules to prevent heat-related illnesses and to regularly check weather conditions, such as the Extreme Heat Report," said Kim Byung-hwan, head of the Daegu City Building Division.
"We will do our best to comply with these rules and protect the health of workers from the heat."
