Patient dies after being restrained in psychiatric hospital... Yang Jae-eun's hospital undergoes on-site investigation (South Korea)
Following the death of a patient at a hospital where well-known psychiatrist Yang Jae-eun serves as director, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRC) plans to investigate the hospital and Yang within this month.
According to the Hankyoreh Newspaper on the 8th, a Human Rights Commission official said, "In relation to the death at W Jin Hospital in Bucheon, we have collected various medical records and CCTV footage of the victim.
The Human Rights Commission said it will conduct an on-site investigation in August after securing the necessary camera footage and other necessary documents. During the on-site investigation, the commission will interview Yang, the defendant in the complaint, and other witnesses, and obtain medical records and other documents.
The agency will decide whether to investigate the case after examining whether it matches the facts. Prior to this, a woman in her 30s, Ms. A, was admitted to the hospital run by Yang in May this year for treatment for diet pill addiction.
He was hospitalized and died 17 days later. At around 7pm on the day before his death, Mr. A was isolated alone in a stable room in the hospital. After Mr. A resisted, the medical staff held his hands and feet for about two hours the following day.
Two hours later, when A's abdomen was swollen, she was bleeding from the nose and out of breath, the medical team untied her and left the room without administering any special treatment.
He lost consciousness and died. An autopsy by the National Forensic Service revealed that the probable cause of death was "acute pseudo-intestinal obstruction."
On June 30, the family of Mr. A submitted a petition to the Human Rights Commission asking for an investigation into the truth behind the death.
The family filed a criminal complaint against Yang and six other medical staff at the Wonmi Police Station in Bucheon. The family claims that the hospital did not properly check on A's condition while isolating and coercing him.
On the other hand, the hospital explained that "Mr. A had chronic constipation and had not been complaining of abdominal pain for a long time, so it was difficult to suspect intestinal obstruction and there was no problem with the treatment on the day of the accident."
On July 30, Yang said, "In relation to the incident that occurred during his hospital stay, he and all the medical staff cannot hide their distress and sincere apologies to the deceased and his family who are grieving the loss of their loved ones."
The family is planning to hold a rally on the 9th together with the Korean Federation of the Mentally Disabled and others to demand that the truth behind A's death be revealed and that those responsible be punished.
