"The details of how he came to South Korea and whether he is seeking asylum are currently being investigated by the relevant authorities, so we cannot confirm them at this time," the ministry said.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, there have been no unusual movements by the North Korean military to date. Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik said in a related statement at a plenary meeting of the National Assembly's Defense Committee on the same day.

This is the first time in about one year and three months since May last year that a North Korean resident has defected to South Korea through the West Sea (Yellow Sea).
Last May, a family of nine North Koreans defected to South Korea by crossing the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea on a wooden boat.
In one case, two North Korean residents initially attempted to defect, but only one was captured.
The whereabouts of the other person are also unknown.
