Kim Kyung-soo and Jo Yun-sun to be given political reinstatement under Liberation Day amnesty (South Korea)
The South Korean Ministry of Justice has announced that former South Gyeongsang Province Governor Kim Kyung-soo and former Blue House Prime Minister Jo Yoon-seo will be granted special pardons and reinstated to serve as recipients of political rehabilitation for this year's Liberation Day.
This is a customary measure taken on the day commemorating the liberation from Japanese colonial rule. The Justice Ministry's Pardon Review Committee will hold a meeting at the Gwacheon Complex on August 8 at 2 p.m. and announce the name of the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Justice.
Kim was previously convicted and imprisoned for internet public opinion manipulation, known as the "Dulking Case," but is due to serve a New Year's amnesty in December 2022.
The execution was waived. However, since reinstatement was not approved at that time, the restriction on the right to run for office will continue until December 2027. If reinstatement is confirmed, Kim will be able to resume political activities.
Meanwhile, Cho is facing charges of involvement in the "cultural blacklist incident," which is said to have excluded groups and artists critical of the government under the Park Geun-hye administration.
He was found guilty and was serving his sentence, but was removed from the list of those to be pardoned in this year's Lunar New Year amnesty. The decision of the Pardon Review Committee was made by Justice Minister Park Seong-je in consultation with Yoon Seo-kyo, the person with the power to pardon.
The list of pardons and reinstatements will be officially finalized after a Cabinet resolution is passed on the 13th. This is the fifth special pardon under the Yun administration, and the president
The office said the process is ongoing but no final decision has yet been made.
