Regarding the death of a Korean Rights Commission official, the opposition camp is on the offensive, saying ”Mrs. Kim Kun-hee should apologize... Special investigation must be carried out” (South Korea)
In response to the death of a high-ranking official who was acting as the anti-corruption bureau chief of the Anti-Corruption Commission, the opposition camps including the Democratic Party and the Fatherland Reform Party have raised concerns about the death of President Yoon Seok-yeol's wife.
On the 11th, Kang Yoo-jung, floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, held a briefing at the National Assembly Communication Center and said, "I am troubled by Kim Gun-hee's custom-made excuses."
"The person who died has passed away, but there has been no condolences or sympathy from the people involved. Is this the kind of cold-heartedness that power enjoys?" he said. He added, "The deceased high-ranking official of the National Anti-Corruption Committee lost his purpose in life and his honor in the country.
He was a man who devoted himself to improving civil rights. In the end, who gained the benefits and fruits of his suffering, which went against his conscience and mission?"
Kang said, "She received a designer bag worth 3 million won (US$3,218), and she (Kim's wife) has not offered any explanation or apology.
Instead, the president, who is her husband, "couldn't just ignore it," the police said, "entered without permission," and lower-ranking officials said, "it was an oversight," making a series of unbelievable excuses."
He continued, "The only person who has not apologized is the person responsible, his wife Kim Kun-hee, who holds the real power in this country. The president and his wife must feel responsible for the deaths of the Crime Committee executives and apologize."
Bae Suzyn, spokesperson for the Fatherland Reform Party, said in a written briefing on the same day, "The director said, 'I am concerned that the handling of the designer bag reporting case is not being handled properly.'
He is said to have confessed his distress to those around him, saying, "I'm sorry," and, "I was forced by the leadership of the Human Rights Commission to end the Kim Kun-hee wife's designer bag case."
The magnitude of the nationwide ridicule over the Corruption Commission's decision to "allow the Korean government to accept designer bags" reflects the magnitude of the pressure and mental distress that the top anti-corruption official has endured.
"Whatever that designer bag was, she pretended not to accept it, pretended to accept it, pretended to apologize, pretended to stop," Bae said.
"They have looked down on the entire nation and ultimately sacrificed a civil servant who is a top expert in anti-corruption work. How will the Yoon Seok-yeol administration take responsibility for this death?"
He added, "The Fatherland Reform Party will definitely launch a comprehensive special investigation by Kim Kun-hee. The special investigation will investigate every detail, even the decision-making process of the Human Rights Committee."
According to the Sejong Nambu Police Station and other sources, Mr. A, a man in his 50s who had been working as the deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the Korean People's Rights Commission, was arrested at around 9:50 a.m. on the 8th at Sejong Nambu Police Station.
He was found dead in an apartment in the city. A is accused of misappropriating designer bags from his wife Kim Kun-hee and using the Hyeri helicopter as an ambulance for Lee Jae-myung, the former head of the Democratic Party.
