Korean Medical Association: ”License system to open hospitals?... Only the government and hospital directors who want low-wage labor will benefit” = Korea
The Korean Medical Association (KMA) recently called for a halt to the government's push to introduce a license system to open hospitals, saying it would "deepen the exploitation of medical residents."
However, the license system for opening a hospital requires that even if one has a medical license, they must complete a certain period of training before they can open a hospital.
On the 14th, the Medical Association issued a press release titled, "Immediately stop discussions on the introduction of a license system that exploits medical residents," and
The licensing system has yet to be clearly defined in Korea. The government has cited examples from overseas, such as the UK and Canada, to highlight the need for a license management system, but the Korean medical system is completely different.
Therefore, we cannot simply substitute foreign examples,” he argued. He continued, “If a license system for opening a clinic is introduced, the period of education and training required to perform medical procedures will be extended.
"If the training period for medical residents, who are forced to endure long hours and forced exploitation, increases, the number of doctors being produced will plummet, and only the government and some hospital directors, who want low-wage labor, will benefit."
He added, "The government tried to increase the number of doctors by implementing the pediatric and adolescent 'open run' policy, but the government has instead made it more difficult to open hospitals, forcing even the remaining medical residents to leave the field.
"If a license system is introduced, the medical system in South Korea, which is already crumbling, will reach a catastrophic level," he said.
"The possibility of doctors who have not undergone the training being produced and practicing medicine is increasing," he said.
The government is explaining this as an 'advanced license management'. The Medical Association has reaffirmed its 'opposition' to this.
The group of doctors who will receive the treatment are currently resident physicians who have left the medical field, so this can also be interpreted as the Medical Association's intention to represent the interests of resident physicians.
The association was not approved by the resident physicians and was dissolved within a month of its establishment.
