Some see this as symbolizing the stratification of university education, but others defend the stickers as a common souvenir found at universities abroad.
The Seoul University Foundation website has an application banner that reads, "We will send you an SNU (Seoul University) Family car sticker."
"By entering information about the bereaved and their child, we will provide services such as school news and information about fundraising activities, as well as send a commemorative gift," the company said.
What's causing controversy is the parent car sticker included in the souvenir.
Looking at the sticker designs, we can see "PROUD PARENT," "PROUD FAMILY," "I'M MOM," and so on.
The logo of Seoul University is drawn along with the words "Mom" and "I'm Dad." A netizen who saw this posted a comment on Feisbook saying, "Parents, family,
"The Mother and Father stickers show that Seoul University itself is proof of the low mental standard of this society."
"The increasing classist vulgarity of the underdeveloped countries,
They are proud to be parents who have raised a Seoul University student who is already an adult, and because of that, they are making their children immature.
"It accurately depicts the current state of the country, without missing anything, including the foundation's quickly made-official idea and the crudeness of its execution."
On the other hand, it is just a souvenir sold by the university, and the name of Seoul National University is not included.
Some have defended the idea, saying that the tag doesn't purport to have any special meaning, and others have questioned whether there's anything wrong with students and their families showing off their hard work.
One netizen said, "If the parents of a student attending Seoul National University put a sticker from Seoul National University on their school's school, it's a problem, but if the parents of a student attending a local university put a sticker from the local university on their school's school, it's not a problem.
"Central Washington University has parent stickers, as does Iowa State, Yale and Harvard."
The Development Foundation also commented on the problematic stickers, "We are working to increase the sense of belonging as a member of Seoul National University.
The stickers were first distributed in January of this year, and more than 2,100 people have received them so far.
